Recently, lawmakers across North America have increased action to address the harm being caused to our planet by our society’s over-reliance on single-use plastics.
In Canada, a ban on single-use plastics is set to come into effect in stages over the next several years. A country-wide ban on the import and manufacture of single-use plastic items (with a few exceptions) is set to come into effect in December 2022, with an extra year allowed for businesses to switch to more sustainable products and clear out their existing inventories.
Canada isn’t the only one targeting single-use plastics: on June 28th of this year, California passed a new law stating that all plastic packaging must reach a 30% recycling rate by 2028, which will increase to 65% by 2032. On May 4th, New Jersey banned single-use plastic bags and styrofoam food containers. They also banned stores over 2,500 square feet from distributing paper shopping bags.
